Recording starts when the meeting does.
When NoteHand detects a meeting in a supported app, it starts recording on its own and opens the Coach window. Press Command-Shift-R for anything else: a manual recording captures your microphone, so a phone on speaker or a room works.
While recording, the menu bar shows the status; choose Stop & Generate Notes when you are finished, or let a detected recording stop itself once the call goes quiet. Afterward, open a recent meeting from the same menu or go to the Library to look further back.

Keep the setup in one place
Choose your speech model and AI provider in Settings › Models, the export folder in General, the auto-stop timing in Recording and the shortcut in Dictation. First launch guides you through the permissions needed for the features you use.
Two ways to record
A detected meeting records the meeting app's audio and your microphone. A manual recording records your microphone only. Both produce the same notes.

Does it record everything on my Mac?
No. A detected meeting records that app's audio and your microphone; a manual recording records your microphone. Nothing else on the Mac is captured, and nothing is recorded while no meeting is detected and you have not started one.
Which apps does it detect?
The Zoom, Microsoft Teams, FaceTime, Slack (huddles) and Discord apps, and browser tabs in Chrome, Safari, Arc, Edge or Firefox whose title shows a Google Meet, Zoom, Webex or Teams meeting. Window titles can be read only with the Screen Recording permission. Anything else, start manually with Command-Shift-R.
Does it start recording on its own?
Yes. When a supported meeting is detected, recording starts about two seconds later and the Coach window opens. There is no per-app switch in this version; stop a recording you do not want from the menu bar and delete it from the Library.
What permissions does it need?
Microphone, to record your side and to hear dictation. Screen Recording, to capture the other side of a call and to read meeting window titles; audio and titles only, no picture of your screen is taken. On macOS 14.2 and later you can switch to Core Audio system capture in Settings › Recording, which macOS approves separately. The direct-download build asks for Accessibility only if you turn on automatic dictation insertion; the App Store build never asks for it.
