{Direct download}

Get NoteHand for your Mac.

The direct build is the same app as the App Store version, built from the same source, signed and notarised by us and installed from a disk image you download here. It can be a version ahead while an App Store update is in review.

Get it on the Mac App Store

Prefer the App Store? No form to fill in, and it unlocks with an in-app purchase.

What you are downloading

It behaves the same way as the App Store build in almost everything. These things differ.

  • Dictation can type into other apps. The recognised text goes straight into whatever you are typing in, once you grant NoteHand the Accessibility permission. A sandboxed app cannot raise that prompt itself, so NoteHand shows you how to add it in System Settings, once. Until you do, the text goes on the clipboard for you to paste, exactly as it does in the App Store build.
  • You unlock it with a licence key rather than an in-app purchase.
  • There is no automatic updater in this release, so a new version means downloading the disk image from this page again and replacing the app. Your key stays valid. See what changed.
  • The app checks that key with api.notehand.io when you enter it and about once a day afterwards, which the privacy policy sets out in full.

After it downloads

01

Install it

Open the disk image and drag NoteHand to Applications. The build is signed and notarised, so macOS opens it after the usual first-run confirmation rather than blocking it.

02

Grant the permissions

Microphone and Screen Recording are requested the first time you record. macOS asks separately for system audio capture if you turn that on in Settings › Recording. Dictation auto-insert also needs Accessibility, which you add yourself in System Settings once NoteHand shows you how. Nothing else is asked for.

03

Choose how notes are written

Transcripts work on their own. Meeting notes and Coach need a language model, and NoteHand does not ship one of its own. On a Mac with Apple silicon, macOS 26 and Apple Intelligence turned on, NoteHand uses Apple’s on-device model, so there is nothing to install. On any other Mac, install Ollama, a free separate download, and NoteHand pulls the model for you, or enter your own API key from OpenAI or Anthropic in Settings › Models. Skip this and you still get a transcript of every meeting, and it does not use one of your free meetings.

04

Record a meeting

NoteHand starts when it detects a call, or press ⌘⇧R for anything else. Your first three meetings are free. See what Coach does.
